Vintonian: Lu Berry Presentation
Lu Berry was born north of Vinton in 1874. She attended rural school and then taught for a while. Lu wanted more education and graduated from the Chicago Art Institute. Then she moved tom France for post graduate work. She lived with her parents and sister until their deaths.
Lu devoted the rest of her life to the study of nature. She let her farm convert to a natural state. Lu was classified as a botanist, but was interested in birds, rocks, plants and kept bees and silkworms. Her specialty was collecting and identifying moths and butterflies.
