Be A Tourist in Your Own Community
By Melissa Schwan

This is part one of a four part series written by Vinton Unlimited.

The purpose of these brief articles is to help acquaint Vinton residents with leisure options that are available right in our own community so we can all become local ‘ambassadors’ so when a visitor might ask “what is there to do in town” each resident can respond with countless suggestions and a sense of community pride.

While Vinton may not be home to a zoo filled with lions, tigers & bears, oh my!, a wet & wild waterpark or a large state of the art museum, we are home to TONS of tourist & leisure opportunities!

The Destination Vinton committee under Vinton Unlimited is focused on tourism, marketing Vinton as a destination for day trips or longer visits. Members of Destination Vinton collaborate with all attractions in the Vinton area to generate interest among tour groups, creaking marketing materials and more.

The DV committee can help arrange tours, act as a tour guide in some situations, act as the liaison between the tourist and the attraction if needed and even create full itineraries based on the tour group’s interests. Our goal is to tailor the visit to their interests.

From May 2014 through May 2015, there is record of over 1,000 people visiting various attractions within the community including the Iowa Braille & Sight Saving School. We only hope to see this number grow!

The Destination Vinton committee is made up of community members with a passion for Vinton, 2 Vinton Unlimited board members and the Vinton Unlimited Director. Meetings are held throughout the month depending on upcoming visits. If you have an interest in joining the Destination Vinton committee, contact Melissa at the Vinton Unlimited office.
